All campers will swim EVERY DAY at Camp Davis!
We also have an incredible instructional swim program at the Gordon JCC. Our full time aquatics staff are some of the most experienced teachers in Middle Tennessee. Campers in grades K-2 enrolled in Traditional Camp will receive multiple group lessons each week as part of their regular schedule.
Before entering the water, all campers must take a swim test. The result of this test determines where in the pool they are able to swim. Campers will have many opportunities to retake the test in order to track their progress throughout the summer.
The Gordon JCC also offers numerous opportunities for additional swim instruction including private lessons, group lessons, and our award winning swim team. For more information, check out our aquatics program.
At Camp Davis we strongly believe that every child should have a summer experience that involves being outside. However, we also keep safety at the front of our operation at all times. Throughout the summer, we are constantly observing the weather and adjust our schedule when necessary to maintain camper safety.
However, the best way to beat the heat is by drinking lots of water and the occasional water balloon fight. Please make sure your child brings a water bottle to camp everyday!
We are also very lucky to have an incredible facility in the Gordon JCC offering us plenty of space to use in the event of rain or other inclement weather.
Both our Traditional Camp and Specialty Track options are great choices for your child this summer.
The Traditional Camp is our core offering, rooted in time tested camp classics. Campers spend their mornings rotating between the five Camp Davis core curriculum areas: sports, art, music, nature, and Israeli Culture. Additionally, Traditional Camp offers instructional swim for campers in grades K-2.
Specialty Track campers spend their mornings focused on one specific activity. Each week, three different Specialty Tracks are offered: Sports, Arts, and STEM.
Regardless of their morning activities, all campers come together each day for lunch and afternoon activities. Additionally, all campers are able to participate in any special programs as well as evening activities.
There is no correct answer as to which program is better between the two offerings. If your camper would prefer a more diverse morning with many shorter activities, Traditional Camp is the way to go. If your camper absolutely loves one particular activity such as LEGOs or Soccer, give Specialty Tracks a shot. We have many campers that go back and forth between the offerings depending on that week's offerings.
One of the core pillars of Camp Davis culture is the importance of taking risks. For many campers, this means trying a new activity. We firmly believe that campers should be encouraged to step out of their comfort zone and try new things.
Obviously, we will not force campers into unsafe situations, however, please note that at Camp Davis we value growth over immediate satisfaction.
We are proud of our ability to be an inclusive and diverse community. At Camp Davis, we strive to provide every child with a summer experience that is engaging and safe.
Keeping this in mind, we do our best to accommodate every camper within our means. We are proud to have an inclusion team led by our Inclusion Director. Though our staff is highly trained, we do not offer one-on-one supervision. We evaluate every child on a case by case basis and in conjunction with the camper's family determine if Camp Davis is an appropriate summer destination. We are happy to accommodate any therapies your child has as well!
